April is #AutismAwareness month. I started the month with a post attempting to dispel erroneous information about the MMR vaccine. As the month ends, I would like to share some resources. These can be useful for the many individuals with autism and their families looking for evidence-based information, for teachers and educators looking for support in working with their students, for behavior analysts looking for information to share with their clients.
- The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) recently launched a sexuality and sex education online resource for teens with autism.
- OAR also has a kit with information to increase awareness of autism among school-aged children.
- Sesame Street has resources for teaching younger children about autism, with the help of Julia.
- The CDC website has various fact sheets on child development and autism.
- There is mounting support for the early diagnosis of autism in children as young as 12 months old. Behavior analysts are working on early identification and intervention in infants, with the aim of mitigating some of the early signs of autism in infants who have older siblings with autism.
